US continues to call for respect of democratic principles, human rights, and rule of law in Pakistan
WASHINGTON (Dunya News) - State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller while briefing the media in Washington said that arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief is an internal matter of Pakistan.
The arrest of PTI chief is Pakistan's "internal matter", the US State Department spokesman said on Monday, declining to take a position on the legal troubles of the former prime minister and frequent US critic.
"At times there are cases (around the world) that are so obviously unfounded that the United States believes it should say something about the matter. We have not made that determination here," Miller added.
"We continue to call for the respect of democratic principles, human rights, and rule of law in Pakistan, as we do around the world, Matthew Miller said.
Police arrested PTI chairman in Lahore on Saturday after a court sentenced him to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts. The guilty verdict could stop the opposition leader from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party from contesting a national election later this year.
